JJ aka Jennifer Herrama of RTX and Royal Trux fame is styling this sick Volcom fashion show tomorrow night. I have SO MUCH to tell you about her collaboration with Volcom outside of this show, I just gotta get myself all together. Anyhow, if you’re in the area… I can bet this is the best a fashion show will ever look. I have to admit this would have been a rad thing to drop in on for my birthday! Thanks to Kurt and Jen for the birthday gifts though! More on all that later!
Our good friend Derrick Cruz has opened his very first storefront today!!!! You may know Derrick as he is behind the wonderful Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons.

Accessories and object makers Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons proudly announce the opening of OCCULTER, their first street-side retail destination. Inspired by a pantheon of fringe thinkers and risk-takers under the influence of the celestial spheres, designers Derrick R. Cruz and newcomer Christine Samar aim to create a material experience that will fan the spark of one basic human necessity: a personal sense of wonder.
OCCULTER opens to the public on July 14, 2010, and is located at the center of New York’s burgeoning Lower East Side shopping and restaurant neighborhood (83 Orchard Street, 10002). Literally attached to the popular Vietnamese eatery An Choi, it’s minimalist interior was designed in collaboration with architect and restaurant co-owner Huy Bui.
OCCULTER will house selected works from the Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons archive as well as pieces designed exclusively for the shop. The location will also host the unveiling of new collections and debut collaborations with other eclectic New York talents, starting with Bryan Collins (album cover designer for School of Seven Bells). Further enhancing the experience, patrons will have an opportunity to take part in the designers’ inspiration via a curated selection of esoteric books (exclusive NYC retailer of Ouroboros Press)and music from labels the likes of Type, Taiga, Important and Sibling Sex Records (all for sale).

It’s still baffling that I’ve made it this far, though there have been some real close calls.
Last year at the exact same time was a real motherfucker, for reasons you can go back and check out for yourself. I honestly can’t believe it’s been almost 365 days. It feels like it was yesterday and the miserable feelings are still residing inside. It still doesn’t seem real and I don’t think it ever will.

SO THIS HAPPENED… I made a ring with total killer jewellery label Meadowlark of New Zealand!
It’s hugely inspired by my punk youth and currently fits with the obsession everyone seems to have with all things studs yet remains pretty chic looking when on in the mean time. I think it rules and I’m incredibly fucking picking regarding my jewelry so that means A LOT.
The outside studs fall right over your other fingers, fitting perfectly along your knuckles. What you can’t see just yet (and I have no problem with it remaining a bit of a mystery until you purchase one yourself) is the details Claire & Greg were happy to oblige me with and that is three indents of screws on the inside of the ring, mimicking the ends of real studs. It may not be something anyone will see when you’re wearing the ring but I’m all about details and think it really drives the look of the studs home.
Anyhow, as wonderful as Meadowlark are, they didn’t just choose me to collaborate with but also Nadia & Cami of No Discount (who I adore), the wonderful Michelle of Kingdom of Styleand total styler Zana of Garbage Dress. I honestly don’t think I could have been grouped with a more amazing list of people!
So the details are as follows: there are only 50 rings going to be made. The cost is $225. It comes with a big old box inside a lovely velvet pouch and each includes a little note card about me and details behind my inspiration, et cetera.
All serious information aside, I’d just be beside myself if you brought one home.
My friend Saira is so far the first to receive one (besides myself obviously) and I couldn’t be more stoked about it because she was such a huge influence on me growing up as she sang in my most favorite band of all time, DETESTATION. She had a huge impact on me and is partly to thank for me not being ashes on someones mantle by now. She’s gonna shoot some photos over too so I’ll post them up soon.. you can bet they’ll be sick..
ANYWAY…… I hope you all dig the ring!

Interesting sidenote: My old man shot all these on my latest acquisition: a vintage monkey fur bag… that also happened to come with it’s counterpart, a 1940′s monkey fur coat……. but more on all that later!!!!
A few weeks ago I read this real Classy book.
I brought it home from the library for a laugh, surprised to even see it there in the first place. I killed an hour skimming through it and, while I’m definitely not looking for any tips on being Classy, I have to say that it seemed like a lot of the messages were geared towards whether or not a guy would approve of what you’re doing/wearing. “What if a guy saw you in that short dress?” “Do you know how many single men are at the airport?” “What if a man saw you get drunk and fall down?” etc etc etc. No offense to the author, because I don’t know a thing about him other than what I picked up in the book, but what is touted as a funny little paperback started to feel like it was just pointing out that one of the main reasons to be Classy, was to see what kind of guy you’d score yourself. It’s a little disconcerting considering the amount of young girls I’m sure bought themselves a copy because the thought of these ideals being burned into their brains is cringe inducing. It’s 50′s housewives shit like you should only act and do things to get the approval of a man.
When I was a young teen I told all my best boy friends that I grew up with that I wanted to shave my head, to which they said they’d never talk to me again if I did. Shortly after when I had my middle school boyfriend shave me a chelsea cut (shaved head with bangs) and dye what little of my hair left purple in his bathroom, those same friends who’d warned me before had really stopped talking to me. But did I honestly care? Not a chance. I was too busy buying records and making out with my punk boyfriend to worry about that at all. Was I inspired by all the punk girls in bands I looked up to to shave my head? Absolutely. But was I worried if a guy would approve of it? NO. The mohawked boy I was making out with was gonna be inviting me over every day even if I had kept my long locks.
The point I’m trying to make is: no one uses shrimp forks anymore.
If you do anything, do it for yourself. Dress for yourself. Don’t dress to please anyone. Don’t worry yourself if a guy at the airport sees you in a baseball hat and Juicy trackpants (because what’s the difference between those and the Alexander Wang sweatpants you just bought, really). Don’t base your whole entire existence around finding a guy. Your babe in a shining leather jacket on the back of a motorcycle (knight/armor/horse) will come when you’ve got no makeup on, just had your purse stolen and had way too many drinks. He’ll give you his phone number and call you the next day. At least in my case that’s how it happened..
